Graduate Degree Pathways
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Programs
You’ll complete the MAT core along with four STEM‑focused courses that strengthen your content knowledge and instructional skills. When you finish, you’ll be ready for recommendation for licensure in North Carolina and equipped to inspire the next generation of problem‑solvers.
If you’re committed to supporting exceptional learners, the MAT in Special Education offers a flexible, fully online pathway into a high‑impact teaching career. You’ll build the knowledge and skills needed to work with students across a wide range of abilities through coursework designed for working adults and those entering the field through Residency Licensure.
The Adapted Curriculum pathway prepares you to teach students with severe to profound disabilities, with courses that explore communication, physical support needs, and evidence‑based practices for learners with complex profiles.
The General Curriculum pathway focuses on supporting students with mild to moderate disabilities, with coursework in math and literacy instruction, collaboration with families and professionals, and classroom management.
Both pathways lead to recommendation for licensure in North Carolina and prepare you to make a meaningful difference in K–12 schools
You’ll complete the MAT core along with specialized TESOL coursework that builds your skills in language acquisition, instructional strategies, and collaboration with families and school communities. When you finish, you’ll be ready for recommendation for licensure and equipped to support English learners in K–12 classrooms.
Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) Programs
The STEM Education concentration is designed for licensed teachers who want to deepen
their expertise in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while strengthening
their instructional practice. Through fully online coursework, you’ll explore current
issues in STEM education, innovative teaching methods, engineering design for K–12
learners, and the purposeful use of technology to enhance learning.
You’ll also engage in classroom‑based teacher research, allowing you to apply new
strategies directly to your own teaching context and contribute to meaningful instructional
improvement.
The Literacy concentration is designed for educators who want to become stronger, more intentional teachers of reading and writing across grade levels. Through coursework in the science of reading, assessment, disciplinary literacy, and instructional technology, you’ll build the expertise needed to support diverse learners and serve as a literacy leader in your school or district.
