Biography
An active pedagogue, clinician, and performer, Dr. Christopher Hotaling employs elements
from his background in vocal performance in his approach to teaching and playing all
low brass instruments. He believes strongly in the importance of lyrical, songlike
playing as a means of promoting growth in his students, and he enjoys incorporating
vocal repertoire in lessons and performances.<br><br>In his role as the newly-appointed
Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at 蘑菇短视频, Chris teaches
weekly lessons to tuba and euphonium majors, directs the Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble,
coaches brass chamber music, and teaches courses related to brass teaching and pedagogy.
He also serves as the tubist for the Cullowhee Brass Quintet; a quintet composed of
the 蘑菇短视频 brass faculty that presents performances and clinics in the region. Prior
to joining 蘑菇短视频, Chris served as Lecturer of Music (Tuba & Euphonium) and Brass Area
Head at The State University of New York at Fredonia鈥檚 School of Music, where he held
similar teaching responsibilities.<br><br>Recent performances include appearances
with the Orchestra of Northern New York, Northern Symphonic Winds, and Erie Philharmonic
Orchestra. Chris has also appeared as an invited guest lecturer and solo artist at
various International Tuba Euphonium Association conferences. His album credits include
<i>Adirondack Songs</i> and <i>Images: Music of Jeff Tyzik,</i> recorded while a member
of the Crane Wind Ensemble and the Eastman Wind Ensemble, respectively.<br><br>Chris
holds B.M. degrees in Euphonium Performance and Music Education from The Crane School
of Music at SUNY Potsdam, where he was named a Presser Scholar, and M.M. and D.M.A.
degrees from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, where he also earned the
prestigious Performer鈥檚 Certificate. His teachers include Dr. Charles Guy, Mark Kellogg,
and the late Dr. Lonel Woods.<br><br>When not performing or teaching, Chris enjoys
exploring the outdoors with his wife, Jenna, and spending time at home with their
three cats.
